PEARL HARBOR DAY AT USS COD

On December 7, 2007, I attended the Pearl Harbor commemoration at the site of the USS COD submarine at the north marginal, near East Ninth Street in downtown Cleveland, Ohio.

PEARL HARBOR DAY AT USS COD

Mr. W. William Walzer snapping a salute. I was so touched by this dear man as he recounted tearfully, sixty years later,  how "...my buddies died in my arms." God bless you, William.  You and your buddies will never be forgotten.

William has contributed much over the years in maintaining the USS COD and the grounds. He took it upon himself to build and erect the flagpole ten years ago, as seen in the next picture. Oh, by the way, he was 77 years young at the time!!!

Not satisfied that "Old Glory" flew only on the USS COD's deck, William took it upon himself to obtain a pole from CEI and construct this three-mast flagpole on the grounds. Your country thanks you, William!

It was bitterly cold that day, but a small price to pay to honor our fallen heroes.
